Abstract Background To assess the association between sleep behaviour and factors (sleep duration, problems, disturbances) risk of depression in older adults. Methods A total 5636 participants (2754 men 2882 women) aged 60 years from 2007–2014 waves National Health Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Sleep disorders assessed home by trained interviewers using Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) system. The combined behaviours referred to as 'sleep patterns (healthy, intermediate poor)', with a 'healthy pattern' defined sleeping 7–9 hours per night no self-reported problems or disorders. Intermediate poor indicated 1 2–3 respectively. Logistic multiple linear regression was used depressive symptoms. Results overall prevalence 7.7% among analysed, rate women being 1.6 times higher than men. Compared normal duration (7–9 hours), short (<7 hours) associated depression, but long (> 9h) did not reach statistical significance. (Short sleep: OR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.65–2.52; 1.47, 0.87–2.48). Self-reported complaints, whether trouble disorder, significantly disturbance: 0.3, 0.24–0.37; 0.35, 0.27–0.45). In addition, correlations appeared be people (OR: 5.6, 4.25–7.39). Conclusion This nationally representative survey showed relationship
