Published: Jan. 17, 2025

Information and communication technologies (ICT) are generally believed to have significant potential reduce energy intensity. In contrast previous empirical studies, which relied on aggregated data, we conduct the first large-scale firm-level investigation into this relationship. Our results, based administrative panel data 28,600 German manufacturing firms, confirm a robust negative relationship between software capital (our proxy for degree of firm digitalization) intensity years 2009 2017. However, effect size is rather small. For average firm, find that 1 percent increase in usage relates decrease by 0.003 percent. Hence, contrary industry-level do not observe substantial improvements connection with ICT adoption. Moreover, exhibits properties can lead an aggregation bias. Digitalisation in manufacturing (or "industry 4.0") is expected to improve energy efficiency and thus reduce intensity manufacturing, but studies show that it may also increase consumption. In this article, we investigate what extent the degree of industry 4.0 linked consumption ten Chinese sectors between 2006 2019. We approximate by combining data on a) patent 4.0-related technologies b) industrial robot intensity. Our results indicate there no significant overall relationship or intensity, contrast some earlier context which find reducing effects digitalisation. argue China might have fewer related benefits than politics industry. Growth-inducing outsourcing energy-intensive tasks, for instance, counteract efficiency-related savings. To decarbonise line with China's proclaimed objective carbon neutrality 2060, policy makers should identify specific opportunities take seriously risks 4.0. The focus be absolute as opposed disguise digital rebound effects; integrating renewable energies, particularly most (metals, chemicals, non-metallic minerals).

The effect rural e-commerce on agricultural (ACEs) controversial, and particularly mechanism behind unknown. To identify impact its mechanisms, we take advantage China’s Rural E-Commerce Demonstration County Program (REDCP) as a quasi-natural experiment use multi-period difference-in-difference (DID) model investigate relationship between emissions. Our data are based panel 355 prefecture-level cities from 2010 2019 in China. We that can reduce by an average 14.4%, but this not long-lasting. Mechanism analyses suggest reduction mainly due fostering economic growth, increasing share low-carbon industry, improving total factor productivity (TFP). In the realm of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) environmental sustainability research, prevailing emphasis often leans toward ICT's role in promoting sustainable development, while adverse consequences ICT remain understudied. The objective this paper is to address research gap by performing a systematic analysis impacts measures, solutions policies aimed at mitigating them. based on literature review total 70 papers addressing or proposing negative sourced from meta-libraries Scopus Web Science. Firstly, descriptive performed uncover trends related literature. Subsequently, most commonly used methods for assessing impact typical mechanisms underlying these are identified. Further comprehensive categorisation provided eight main classes identified impacts. We combine results into framework. Additionally, an assessment how proposed align with 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals provided. conclusions highlight existing gaps propose new directions also identifying set policy implications.

Telematics are increasingly promising and adopted to augment the productivity efficiency of systems in various industrial sectors. Although potential environmental benefits deploying telematics solutions often highlighted, proper quantification allocation added information communication technology-related (ICT) equipment is a challenge that still needs be addressed. To help address gap, life cycle assessment (LCA) done on box equipped an autonomous robot performing precision agricultural tasks. The LCA conducted using primary data state-of-the-art libraries. Particular attention paid how model, allocate, quantify impact related exchanges, through mobile networks (like 4G or 5G) Wi-Fi, as well infrastructures needed operate box. By having complete picture quantitative understanding such additional impacts, results determine minimum improvement level, e.g., terms resource yield, ICT solution bring ecologically beneficial.
