Human settlements suitability (HEI) is the foundation of urban development and critical for achieving sustainable United Nations' goals. Existing studies on HEI have paid little attention to characteristics at different scales climate zones or spatial differences along urban–rural gradients (URGs). This study used multisource data select natural humanistic elements constructed a framework evaluating 31 provincial capital cities in China, aiming address limitations. The results showed that: (1) China ranged from 0 51.54, showing an overall increasing trend northwest southeast, coastal was considerably higher than that inland cities. (2) built-up areas conformed gradually with expansion scales, obvious average zones, shown as follows: tropical monsoon > subtropical temperate plateau mountain continental. (3) When distance city centre increased, decreasing HEI, albeit varying degrees decrease. Further, discrepancies URGs were closely related zones. Scientific objective evaluation prerequisite optimising patterns national planning. Based multidimensional perspectives URGs, breadth research has been enriched, which strategic significance governing planning augmenting competitiveness.

Environmental quality is a global concern, especially in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries where abundant mineral resources, economic growth, and globalization have strained the environment through urbanization resource exploitation. This study examines impact of (GLOL), (URBN), natural extraction (NRER), institutional (INSQ), foreign direct investment (FDI) on environmental GCC from 1999 to 2021. Cross-sectional dependence (CSD) was assessed using Lagrange Multiplier (LM) cross-dependence (CD) techniques, stationarity confirmed with Levin–Lin–Chu test. The Augmented Dickey–Fuller (ADF) co-integration test verified long-term relationships, Pooled Mean Group Autoregressive Distributed Lag (PMG-ARDL) methodology short- effects. Our findings show that FDI, GLOL, INSQ negative impacts quality, while NRER URBN are beneficial. In short term, FDI improve green URBN, detrimental Policy recommendations include discouraging non-renewable projects, promoting sustainable addressing income inequality investing urban development reduce ecological footprints (ECFTs) enhance countries.

Transregional energy transmission can help balance resource allocation and serve long-term regional interests. The West–East Gas Pipeline Project (WEGPP), which is the longest natural gas pipeline in China, aims to address serious imbalance between supply demand China's eastern western regions. Few studies have considered WEGPP's effect on carbon emissions terms of transmission. Using data for prefecture-level cities from 2000 2019, we consider WEGPP as a quasi-natural experiment adopt staggered difference-in-differences model investigate causal emissions. We find that reduce emissions; various robustness tests confirm reliability results. However, emission-reduction heterogeneous owing factors such operation batch, location, administrative level, population size, endowment, industrial whether city belongs an old base. also reveal three important channels effect: environmental concern government, agglomeration, green technological innovation. This study provides reference assessing feasibility effectiveness context emission reduction.
