In an era marked by heightened political polarization and escalating crises, our study provides timely, empirics-first insights into how ideology influences consumers' variety-seeking behaviors when they experience crisis-induced threats—specific events that are perceived to endanger physical financial well-being—versus normal conditions. We advance knowledge investigating the interplay between ideology, variety seeking, threats using a large-scale dataset of over 32 million U.S. grocery transactions before during initial wave COVID-19 pandemic, as well county-level voting results. doing so, we seek answer three questions: (1) How does influence seeking under conditions? (2) do seeking? (3) threats? Our findings reveal that, conditions, conservatives show greater than liberals. Yet, threats, decrease their whereas liberals increase theirs.
