A sustainable solution for aquaculture wastewater treatment: Evaluation of tannin-based and conventional coagulants

The
global
population
faces
increasing
challenges
in
securing
fresh
water
and
food
production.
Aquaculture,
a
key
source
for
obtaining
protein,
contributes
significantly
to
environmental
pollution,
releasing
suspended
solids,
organic
matter,
nitrogen,
phosphorus
into
bodies.
Some
wastewater
treatment
methods
can
be
expensive
due
high
equipment,
energy,
reagents,
maintenance
costs,
prompting
the
search
more
sustainable
alternatives.
This
study
evaluates
performance
of
tannin-based
coagulants
from
Castanea
sativa
shells
(CS)
treating
recirculating
an
aquaculture
plant.
Two
coagulants,
C1
C2,
were
produced
using
ethanolamine
(ETA)
NH4Cl,
respectively.
efficiency
removing
color,
turbidity,
was
compared
commercial
coagulant
(Tanfloc
SG)
chemical
ones
(FeCl3
Al2(SO4)3).
Coagulant
at
10
mg
L-1,
removed
90
%
turbidity
32
phosphorus,
outperforming
Al-based
(20
L-1).
Moreover,
CS-based
reduced
natural
matter
(NOM),
expressed
as
UV
absorbance
254
nm,
dissolved
carbon
(DOC),
though
none
nitrogen
levels.
Toxicity
tests
indicated
low
bacterial
inhibition,
with
C2
showing
inhibition
rates
8-10
%.
sludge
rich
calcium
(97-1500
g-1),
magnesium
(408-638
potassium
(347-894
making
it
suitable
soil
conditioner,
further
research
is
necessary.
Tannin-based
particularly
chestnut
