Since 2011, Sargassum seaweed has spread widely outside the Sargasso Sea, causing massive strandings on coasts of West Indies and Mexico, serious economic, ecological, health problems. This Atlantic pelagic alga characteristic moving in rafts. According to situ observations, their size shape can vary with wind. To better understand effect wind coverage aggregation size, we conducted a large temporal (2019–2022) spatial scale study using OLCI/Sentinel-3 satellite imagery. During this period, database nearly 1 million Sentinel-3 aggregations, including geometric characteristics, was established. Analysis distribution showed that dual disaggregation agglomeration depending speed size: (1) low winds favor for smallest aggregations largest aggregations; (2) high all sizes. In addition, topography also plays role distribution: Caribbean arc favors over offshore zones, coastal areas zones.

Abstract Pelagic Sargassum has increased dramatically in the past decade, primarily annually recurrent Great Atlantic Belt (GASB) that extends from coast of West Africa to Gulf Mexico. Using satellite observations density and mesoscale eddies 2011 2023, we investigate whether more can be found eddies. Cyclonic were contain 6%–47% (relative eddy‐free waters) across all selected regions within GASB, with highest their inner cores (<0.5 eddy radius). Impacts anticyclonic weaker varied between regions. In addition, enrichment tended higher greater size or amplitude, such as North Brazil Current rings those Caribbean Sea. These findings may inform mitigation strategies, for example, through physical removal targeted locations.

Since 2011, massive strandings of holopelagic Sargassum have occurred on the coasts Caribbean and West Africa. Although open ocean mats are oases biodiversity, their stranding has a number negative ecological, economic health consequences. To limit these impacts, needs to be collected as quickly possible avoid its decomposition, which requires accurate predictions date, location abundance strandings. Two complementary approaches been developed for this purpose: satellite remote sensing technique, detect aggregations, modeling, forecast displacement growth.
