Anaerobic digestion is an effective and sustainable technology for resource utilization of organic wastes. Recently, adding conductive materials in anaerobic to promote direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) has become a hot topic, which enhances the syntrophic conversion various organics methane. This review comprehensively summarizes recent findings DIET mechanisms with different mediating ways. Meanwhile, influence on performance underlying how mediated by influences lag phase, methane production, system stability are systematically explored. Furthermore, current challenges such as unclear biological mechanisms, non-DIET limitations matters syntrophically oxidized way DIET, problems practical application discussed detail. Finally, future research directions outlined.

Transition from fossil fuels to non-conventional sources is needed tackle the global energy crisis and environment related issues. Thus, use of organic waste generated various industrial sectors can help produce gaseous through anaerobic digestion, photo dark fermentation, other biochemical strategies. Current biogas biohydrogen production practices are less efficient require additional interventions for biofuel yield improvement. In this regard, adding biochar has shown enhancing fuel by about 5%–400%, adsorbing inhibitors such as ammonia, pathogens, hydrogen sulfide, activating gas-producing mesophilic thermophilic microorganisms. This review provides recent updates future perspectives associated with effect on its underlying mechanism. Further, there a need establishing circular bioeconomy approach utilization 'waste-chain', which techno-economic analysis life-cycle assessment required.
