The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening the security electric energy have gained enormous momentum recently. Integrating intermittent renewable sources (RESs) such as PV wind into existing grid has increased significantly in last decade. However, this integration hampers reliable stable operation by posing many operational control challenges. Generation uncertainty, voltage angular stability, power quality issues, reactive support fault ride-through capability are some various generated from RESs fluctuates due to unpredictable weather conditions speed sunshine. Energy storage systems (ESSs) play a vital role mitigating fluctuation storing excess then making it accessible on demand. This paper presents review covering several aspects including their main applications for integration, type technology converters used operate technologies. comprehensive will guide utilities; researchers select best most recent device based effectiveness economic feasibility.

The energy transition requires large-scale storage to provide long-term supply and short-term grid stability. Though pumped hydro is widely used for this purpose, regions without natural topography do not have the potential traditional high-head storage. To address this, multiple projects low-head seawater been proposed, though few implemented. Here, we review state of art components projects, construction in shallow seas or integrated into coastal defenses. We reference all civil infrastructure components, addition legal, environmental/biological, financial constraints, drawing knowledge from planned, constructed tidal power worldwide. Combining knowledge, make a preliminary evaluation feasibility North Sea. find that an elevated basin more economical than excavated one bathymetry (10 m deep less), while reverse true deeper water. Corrosion fouling prevention are already well developed due implementation these measures at plants. Dam feasible if taken piping, macro-instability (primarily rapid drawdown), bursting clay layer. Within context Europe, legal environmental regulations may be most formidable hurdles such projects.

Several such as combination solar photovoltaic (PV) with pumped hydro storage system (PHSS), Wind PHSS PV-Wind-PHSS have been studied. selected are evaluated based on two factors system’s total cost (TC) loss load probability (LOLP). To achieve results, metaheuristics non-dominated sorting whale optimization algorithm (NSWOA) genetic algorithm-II (NSGA-II) applied under MATLAB software. optimal sizing components was done hourly meteorological data generated grid. Both algorithms provided satisfactory results. However, PV-PHSS, Wind-PHSS, NSWOA is, respectively, 1%, 6%, 0.2% lower than NSGA-II. According scenario at LOLP 0% 4.6% 17% Wind-PHS PV-PHSS scenarios, respectively. profitability all three showed that project regardless considered.
