The increasing share of renewable energy sources in the global electricity generation defines need for effective and flexible storage solutions. PHES with their technically matured plant design wide economical potential can generally match those needs. But especially lowland countries, where low-head applications are needed, current turbomachinery technologies offer no viable solutions LH-PHES to be a competitive technology context realizing European Green Deal. new developments hydraulic turbomachineries, smart operation schemes powerful site identification algorithms shape these plants towards future technology. Therefore, this study demonstrates that, through novel contra-rotating, variable-speed, reversible pump-turbine designed operation, operate over range heads discharges at very high efficiencies. Additionally, it shows use more than one CR-RPT unit parallel action, different power settings selected achieve efficiency fast reaction times. Furthermore, newly developed simulation code is used support RPT considering most compact design, which achieved by Prototype 0 LAT 31 m dam diameter 1600 m. Thus, investment costs minimized while revenue maximized delivery grid services tailored suit market Moreover, development algorithm, supports offshore sites (in Greater North Sea).

Conventional direct torque control (DTC) is one of the best systems for regulating an induction motor (IM). However, DTC’s enormous waves in flux and cause acoustic noise that degrades performance, especially at low speeds due to switching frequency. Direct systems, which focus just on flux, have been proposed as a solution these problems. In order improve DTC this work introduces fractional-order fuzzy logic controller method. The objective analyze technique critically with regard its efficacy reducing ripple, tracking speed, loss, algorithm complexity, sensitivity parameters. According to the European-Green-Deal, share of renewable energy sources (RES) in electricity generation is increased by e.g. solar/wind. This requires deployment effective storage solutions compensate fluctuating network supply RES. A well-developed technology pumped hydro (PHES), but especially lowland countries, Denmark, typical high-head plant locations are missing. Therefore, new developments low-head hydraulic turbomachineries and smart operation schemes needed shape LH-PHES towards a viable future through maximizing performance minimizing investment costs. Hence, this study demonstrates novel design contra-rotating, variable-speed, reversible pump-turbines (CR-VS-RPT) for with peak efficiency above 90 % pump/turbine mode. The results comparing shaft-driven rim-driven CR-VS-RPT show influences chosen RPT type on reservoir size/investment. also proves that losses due bulb have decisive impact head range, thus required dam material volume. Despite slightly less efficient CR-VS-RPT, absence increases during at low LATs. However, LAT key factor selection minimize LH-PHES.
