Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) technologies have attracted substantial interest due to their advantages over traditional biological nitrogen removal processes, including high efficiency and low energy demand. Currently, multiple side-stream applications of the anammox coupling process been developed, one-stage, two-stage, three-stage systems such as completely autotrophic nitrite, denitrifying oxidation, simultaneous phosphorus removal, partial denitrification-anammox, nitrification integrated fermentation denitritation. The one-stage system includes oxygen-limited nitrification/denitrification, aerobic de-ammonification, single-stage using anammox, nitritation. Two-stage systems, single reactor for high-activity fixed-film activated sludge, also developed. Three-stage comprise denitrification denitrification, performance these is highly dependent on interactions between functional microbial communities, physiochemical parameters, environmental factors. Mainstream are not well developed require further research development. demand a carbon/nitrogen ratio maintain levels nitrite-oxidizing bacteria, concentrations nitrite in wastewater, retention bacteria biomass. To summarize various aspects this review provides information regarding diversity different genera engineering side streams mainstream processes wastewater treatment. Additionally, offers detailed insights into challenges related technology delivers solutions future sustainable research.
