Abstract
Purpose.
The
purpose
of
this
study
is
to
quantify
the
life
cycle
environmental
impacts
biomethane
from
cattle
manure
used
in
passenger
transportation
Argentina,
comparing
fossil
natural
gas,
biomethane,
and
with
carbon
capture
storage
(CCS)
under
current
conditions
2050
prospects.
The

cradle-to-wheel
LCA
was
conducted
using

Under
conditions,
coupled
CCS
could
reduce
global
warming
potential
43.5%
73.2%
relative
(from
0.117
kg
CO₂-eq/km

CO₂-eq/km)
depending
on
distance
transported,
net-negative
values
achieved
when
urea
substitution
credits
are
applied.
However,
eutrophication
acidification
increase
due
application,
while
toxicity
indicators
rise
higher
energy
demand
upgrading
CCS.
Prospective
scenarios
projected
further
GWP
reductions
up
80%
(e.g.
scenario)
decarbonized
systems,
but
burdens
intensified
deeper
electrification
pathways.
Key
hotspots
include
methane
leakage,
grid
emissions,
management.
Conclusions.
Manure-derived
particularly
offers
climate
benefits
Argentine
transportation,
may
shift
eutrophication,
categories.
Full
neutrality
requires
reducing
leaks,
decarbonizing
electricity
inputs,
optimizing
use.
Policymakers
industry
should
promote
decentralized
digesters
near
livestock
operations
lower
transport
supply
renewable
use
best
practices
minimize
maximizing
fertilizer
benefits.
