Context The influence of anthropogenic pressures on plankton communities in well-flushed estuaries has been overlooked. Owing to this ecosystem’s short water-residence time, they are foreseen be mainly composed microorganisms from neritic–oceanic sources, more resilient impacts. Aims This study characterises the bacterioplankton Urdaibai, a small-drainage estuary located at UNESCO biosphere reserve, unravel its annual dynamic and ecological status. Methods Amplicon sequencing was used assess euhaline shifts microgAMBI index depicted status estuary. Key results A differentiated community identified upstream waters throughout year. In addition, organisms commonly associated with faecal waste were detected. poor or moderate along cycle, but surprisingly worsened during winter. Conclusions above suggests that bacterial well-fluxed is complex than anticipated. Importantly, analysis pollution-indicative bacteria proved water policy needs further evaluated. Implications completion an efficient sewage treatment system for protected touristic strongly recommended. Incorporating information current monitoring will constitute useful valuable tool.

Phytoplankton monitoring is essential for understanding the functioning of aquatic ecosystems and assessing water quality. Based on pigment analysis, different mathematical tools have been developed to relate pigments phytoplankton groups determine contribution each these total biomass. However, most several drawbacks, such as need a minimum sample number or previous knowledge community composition. The present study proposes new chemotaxonomic tool, ‘PIGMENTUM’, based simultaneous equations that take into account lack exclusiveness diagnostic which defends use ‘pigment groups’ define composition over ‘taxonomic groups’. Additionally, PIGMENTUM does not require prior area, generic ratios are applied, samples treated independently it allows individualised ratio correction if necessary. accuracy was tested with data series 330 containing trophic statuses (0.1-251 μg l -1 chlorophyll [chl ]) masses (salinities between 0 36 PSU). median similarity calculated real chl 82%, 98% obtained reliable results, tool being especially accurate eutrophic hypereutrophic waters. thus proven efficient in wide variety systems environmental conditions, allowing variability time space and/or determining causing eutrophication isolated blooms, without using additional techniques.

Phytoplankton responds rapidly to nutrient availability variations, becoming a useful indicator for eutrophication and/or management actions reduce it. The present study evaluated the medium-term response of phytoplankton community temperate estuary (Urdaibai estuary) cessation discharges from wastewater treatment-plant (WWTP), comparing physicochemical conditions and before (2020) after (2022) sewerage works. led decrease ammonium phosphate, causing decreases biomass in outer middle increases surroundings WWTP. Community composition also changed, recording an increase prasinoxanthin-containing algae's contribution total biomass, shift inner estuary, mainly flagellates (alloxanthin-containing chlorophyll b-containing algae) diatoms, which could be prompted by change nutrient-ratios nitrogen source, might indicate recuperation system.

Euskal Herrian, hirietako hondakin-uren isurketek eutrofizazio arriskua eta bainua hartzeko debekua eragin dituzte, bereziki Okaren estuarioaren barrualdean. Horregatik, 2015ean, hondakin-urak tratatzeko Bermeon araztegi berri bat jarri zen martxan, edukiera handiagokoa, 2021ean Urdaibai eskualdeko hondakin-ur ia guztiak estolderia-sistemara lotu ziren. Lan honen helburua uraren kalitatearen espazio- denbora-joerak saneamenduaren fase ezberdinekin zehaztea izan zen. Horretarako, mantenugaien kontzentrazioak aldagai ozeanografiko nagusiak hiru hilean behin neurtu ziren estuarioan zehar kokatutako laginketa-puntuetan, 1995 2021 bitartean. Horrez gain, 2008-2021 bainu-denboraldian, bi astetik behin, bakterio fekalak aztertu estuarioko lau hondartzetan. Estuarioaren barruko laginketa-puntutik kanpo laginketa-punturaino, gradiente ikusten da, mantenugai guztien kontzentrazioaren batez besteko balioetan, baita oxigenoaren klorofilaren balioetan ere. Bestalde, saneamenduak aurrera egin ahala, kalitate fisiko-kimikoa hobetu dela ikus daiteke, aztertutako azken urteetan. Bainatzeko urei dagokienez, hondartzak zentsu ofizialetik kendu 2016. urtean, urteetan nahikoa ez erakusteagatik; baina 2021ean, hondartza horietako berriro sartu bainatzeko guneen zerrendan. Lehenengo hobekuntza-seinale horiek adierazten dute neurri zuzentzaileak eraginkorrak izaten ari direla, bai sargaien kudeaketan, kostaldeko zerbitzuen lehengoratze babesean
