Abstract Metal ions, which are naturally occurring in food, soil, and water, present every part of the environment. Therefore, it is imperative to identify those using accessible economical methods. In this study, a novel two‐step chemical modification process for pullulan, natural polymer, presented. This yields macromolecular derivative with considerably increased fluorescence, enabling efficient detection specific metal ions. Furthermore, recently synthesized polymer displays distinctly divergent characteristics comparison native consequence undergone reactions. These include existence fluorescence solubility organic solvents, lacking from initial polymer. Subsequent exhaustive thermal spectral analysis, polymer's capacity discern disparate ions investigated.
