Abstract Medicolegal systems investigate the cause and manner of death, particularly differentiating between unintentional intentional deaths. The examination remains from unlawfully killed individuals is critical in exposing human rights violations. However, forensic medical investigations these can face multiple challenges, especially contexts marked by limited resources, political influence, sub-optimal investigative procedures. When killings are state-sanctioned or facilitated well-resourced non-state actors, clandestine disposal create a culture impunity, leaving affected families communities without recourse resolution. This study aggregates articles English Spanish, examining current state how research on extrajudicial executions forced disappearances informs practice. It highlights gaps empirical literature, reporting scientific findings that impact investigation victims unlawful killings. These cases' inherently non-linear unpredictable nature, often influenced chaotic unstable conditions, disproportionate challenges for forensics practitioners. To address gaps, this review suggests leveraging epidemiological frameworks to track data trends killings, supporting public health initiatives prevention policy. emphasises need comprehensive documentation, robust databases, adaptive methodologies navigate uncertainties systemic limitations inherent complex domain medicolegal death investigation.
