Presently, conventional technologies in water treatment are not efficient enough to completely mineralize refractory contaminants. In this context, the implementation of catalytic processes could be an alternative. Despite advantages provided terms kinetics transformation, selectivity, and energy saving, numerous attempts have yet led at industrial scale. This review examines investigations different scales for which controversies limitations must solved bridge gap between fundamentals practical developments. Particular attention has been paid development solar-driven some other emerging processes, such as microwave assisted catalysis, plasma-catalytic or biocatalytic remediation, taking into account their specific drawbacks. Challenges a better understanding related complexity systems coexistence various solid-liquid-gas interfaces identified.

Fourteen phylogenetically diverse 17β-estradiol-degrading bacteria (strains KC1−14) were isolated from activated sludge of a wastewater treatment plant. These isolates widely distributed among eight different generaAminobacter KC6 and KC7), Brevundimonas (strain KC12), Escherichia KC13), Flavobacterium KC1), Microbacterium KC5), Nocardioides KC3), Rhodococcus KC4), Sphingomonas KC8−KC11 KC14)of three Phyla: Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes. All 14 capable converting 17β-estradiol to estrone, but only strains KC6, KC7, KC8) showed the ability degrade estrone. Only strain KC8 could use as sole carbon source. Based on degree estrogens being transformed estrogenicity metabolites and/or end products estrogen degradation, degradation patterns (patterns A−C) observed tests using resting cells. Eleven out pattern A, where was stoichiometrically converted Estrone confirmed be product 17β-estradiol; however, estrone not further degraded during course experiments. Strains KC7 exhibited B, both17β-estradiol degraded, with slower rates than those in A. Strain C, rapidly within 3 days. No residual or estrogenic activity detected after 5 days, suggesting that into nonestrogenic metabolites/end products. KC6−8 nonspecific monooxygenase dioxygenase activity. However, relationship between its unclear.

A denitrifying bacterium, designated strain FST, was isolated from anoxic digested sludge on oestradiol [17β-oestra-1,3,5(10)-triene-3,17-diol] or testosterone (17β-hydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one) as the sole source of carbon and energy with nitrate electron acceptor. Strain FST represents first known bacterium to grow anaerobically both (C-18) (C-19). Steroidal hormones were degraded completely by reduction dinitrogen monoxide, which further reduced in stationary-phase cultures. Gram-negative cells slightly curved rods, 0.3–0.5×0.6–1.6 μm size, motile, non-fermentative, non-spore-forming catalase- oxidase-positive, showing optimal growth at pH 7.0, 28 °C 0.1 % (w/v) NaCl. Beside steroidal hormones, utilized only a narrow range organic substrates acceptor, including several fatty acids glutamate. No aerobic anaerobic occurred liquid solid complex media. Although Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) have been identified as potentially important sources for the release of estrogens into environment, information is lacking on concentrations in whole lagoon effluents (including suspended solids) which are used land application. Lagoons associated with swine, poultry, and cattle operations were sampled at three locations each direct analysis by GC/ MS/MS estrogen conjugates LC/MS/MS. Estrogen also analyzed indirectly first subjecting same samples to enzyme hydrolysis. Solids from centrifuged extracted free estimate total load. Total levels (estrone, 17alpha-estradiol, 17beta-estradiol, estriol) generally higher swine primary (1000-21000 ng/L), followed poultry (1800-4000 dairy secondary (370-550 beef (22-24 ng/L) samples. Swine lagoons contained 17(alpha-estradiol comparable those 17beta-estradiol. Confirmed included estrone-3-sulfate (2-91 17beta-estradiol-3-sulfate (8-44 17alpha-estradiol-3-sulfate (141-182 17beta-estradiol-17-sulfate (72-84 some lagoons. Enzymatic hydrolysis indicated presence additional unidentified not detected bythe LC/MS/MS method. In most cases accounted least a third equivalents. Collectively, these methods can be better determine loads CAFO operations, this research shows that contribute significantly overall load, even different types
