The occurrence and behavior of β-blockers, antiepileptic drug carbamazepine its metabolites, X-ray contrast agent iopromide, natural synthetic hormones, several groups hormone-like personal care products (PCPs), including antiseptics (triclocarban, triclosan, 2-phenylphenol), parabens bisphenol A, were investigated in municipal wastewater, sewage sludge, urban river water the Pearl River Delta, South China. pharmaceuticals, hormones PCPs ubiquitously detected raw wastewater from a treatment plant (STP). Only triclocarban triclosan at significant amounts dewatered sludge. Iopromide greatly removed/transformed aqueous phase wastewater. β-blockers only moderately removed/transformed. Carbamazepine passed through STP almost unchanged. Biodegradation was dominant process for elimination/transformation most STP. However, sorption also played an important role fate with nearly 50% mass load entering ended up persisted estrone, widely Guangzhou. Bisphenol A had highest concentration. pharmaceutical concentrations higher March than May, likely due to less dilution by lower precipitation. omnipresence high levels pharmaceuticals may be associated direct discharge untreated pose potential risks ecological system.
