Abstract Groundwater in karst aquifers constitutes about 25% of drinking water sources globally. Karst are open systems, susceptible to contamination by surface‐borne pollutants. In this study, springs and wells from two Illinois, USA, were found contain microplastics other anthropogenic contaminants. All fibers, with a maximum concentration 15.2 particles/L. The presence microplastic was consistent parameters, including phosphate, chloride triclosan, suggesting septic effluent as source. More studies needed on sources, abundance, impacts ecosystems.
