The widespread occurrence and adverse environmental health-related impacts of various types emerging contaminants (ECs) have become an issue high concern. With ever increasing scientific knowledge, socio-economic awareness, problems ecological apprehensions, people are more concerned about the ECs, around globe. Among biologically active compounds from pharmaceutical, cosmeceutical, biomedical, personal care products (PPCPs), endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), flame-retardants paramount presence persistence ECs in water bodies continued burning interest, worldwide. Various being discharged knowingly/unknowingly with/without partial treatments into aquatic environments that pose serious health issues affects entire living ecosystem. So far, approaches been developed for degradation removal to diminish their impact. Many previous and/or ongoing studies focused on efficient via numerous treatment strategies, i.e. (1) physical, (2) chemical (3) biological. However, experimental evidence is lacking enable specific predictions mechanistic fate across in-practice systems. In this context, deployment oxidoreductases such as peroxidases (lignin peroxidases, manganese-dependent horseradish peroxidase), aromatic dioxygenases, oxygenases, laccases, tyrosinases received considerable research attention. Immobilization highlighted a promising approach improve enzyme catalytic performance stabilization, well as, protect three-dimensional structure against undesirable consequences harsh reaction environment. This work overviews current state-of-the-art critical aspect related hazardous pollutants at large particular by immobilized oxidoreductase enzymes. first part review focuses occurrence, physiochemical behavior, potent sources significant routes ECs. Following that, environmentally-related discussed second part. third part, biodegradation strategies with comparative overview several conventional vs. non-conventional methods presented briefly. fourth majorly operational modes different enzyme-based biocatalytic processes biotransformation wide array harmful contaminants. Finally, left behind gaps, concluding remarks future trends recommendations use carrier-immobilized perspective also discussed.
