Pharmaceuticals have been considered 'contaminants of emerging concern' for more than 20 years. In that time, many laboratory studies sought to identify hazard and assess risk in the aquatic environment, whilst field searched targeted candidates occurrence trends using advanced analytical techniques. However, a lack systematic approach detection quantification pharmaceuticals has provided fragmented literature serendipitous approaches. Evaluation extent plethora human veterinary available requires reliable measurement trace levels contaminants across different environmental compartments (water, sediment, biota - which largely neglected). The focus on pharmaceutical concentrations surface waters other exposure media therefore limited both characterisation exposome wildlife understanding cause effect relationships. Here, we compile current approaches accumulation data review state research field. Our analysis provides evidence support 'Matthew Effect' raises critical questions about use analyte lists biomonitoring. We provide six recommendations stimulate improve future avenues.

Much progress has been made in the past few decades understanding sources, transport, fate, and biological effects of contaminants emerging concern (CECs) aquatic ecosystems. Despite these advancements, significant obstacles still prevent comprehensive assessments environmental risks associated with presence CECs. Many center around extrapolation single chemicals observed laboratory or found individual organisms species field to impacts multiple stressors on food webs. In present review, we identify 5 challenges that must be addressed promote studies CECs from singular exposure events multispecies web interactions. There needs be: 1) more detailed information complexity mixtures environment, 2) a greater sublethal wide range organisms, 3) an ascertaining consequences variable duration CEC exposures within across generations species, 4) linkage systems, 5) documenting trophic We examine current literature show how can fill knowledge gaps. Abstract The application of homogeneous catalysts in water remediation is limited by their excessive chemical and energy input, weak regenerability, potential leaching. Heterogeneous catalytic membranes (CMs) offer a new approach to facilitate efficient, selective, continuous pollutant degradation. Thus, integrating filtration with heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can promote thermodynamic kinetic mass transfers spatially confined intrapores diffusion‐reaction processes. Despite the remarkable advantages CMs, engineering practically restricted due fuzzy design criteria for specific applications. Herein, recent advances CMs are critically reviewed flow tempospatially proposed. Further, state‐of‐the‐art CM materials mechanisms reviewed, after which tempospatial confinement comprising nanoconfinement effect, interface transfer emphasized, thus clarifying roles construction performance optimization CMs. Additionally, fabrication methods based on pore sizes summarized an overview evaluations presented. Finally, future directions research treatment,
