Abstract The occurrence of emerging pollutants (EPs) is continuously reported worldwide. Nevertheless, only few these compounds are toxicologically evaluated due to their vast numbers. Reliable analytical methods and toxicity assessment the basis either management or elimination EPs. In this paper, literature published in 2018 on EPs were reviewed with special regard occurrence, detection methods, fate environment, ecological assessment. Particular focus was placed practical considerations, novel processes, new solution strategies. Practitioner points Literature reviewed. This review article pollutants. processes

ABSTRACT Industrial development has brought China both opportunities and challenges since the reform opening up in 1978. Spatial temporal analysis showed that rapid industrialization made eastern under a more serious pollution stress. The most effects of industrial were reflected aquatic soil ecosystem degradation, damage can be observed from species, population, community to level. Public consciousness about contaminated sites rose 2004 leading greater efforts ecological remediation, monitoring, risk governance. Considerable are still needed expanding extent breadth monitoring explore where greatest risks lie how control them. Ecology become popular discipline will further developed help achieve Sustainable Development Goals. Future research for better management should focused on multi-media transfer mixed pollutants, mechanisms clean energy material flow, integration with human health risk.

The occurrence and impacts of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in the aquatic environment have gained widespread attention over past two decades. Due to large number potential contaminants, monitoring campaigns, treatment plants, proposed regulations should preferentially focus on specific pollutants with highest for ecological human health effects. In present study, a multi-criteria screening approach based hazard exposure potentials was developed prioritization 405 unregulated EOCs already Chinese surface water. Hazard potential, risk quotients effects were quantitatively analyzed used screen contaminants. defined by contaminant persistence, bioaccumulation, ecotoxicity, effects; similarly, function concentration detection frequency. total, 123 compounds passed preselection process, which involved priority index equal normalized multiplied potential. Based scheme, 11 identified as top-priority, 37 chemicals high-priority. results obtained compared four other schemes or health. effectively captured integrated from more simplistic schemes. data gaps, uncertainty categories classified recommend: ① regular monitoring, derivation environmental quality standards, development control strategies; ② increased monitoring; ③ fortified assessment; ④ efforts collect toxicity data. Overall, 20 recommended EOCs. prioritized list provides necessary information authoritative monitor, control, evaluate, manage risks environmentally-relevant
