Abstract This paper aims to investigate the effect of financial development and renewable energy consumption on consumption‐based CO 2 emissions in Chile while controlling for economic growth electricity consumption. Based aim paper, autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) bounds with Kripfganz Schneider's (2018) approximations, fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS), dynamic (DOLS), gradual shift causality tests are applied this study. The outcomes clearly reveal that reduce Chile, increase carbon emissions. test provides consistent results ARDL, FMOLS, DOLS estimators. Therefore, policymakers should dynamically encourage research low‐carbon technologies investments imported nonrenewable sources level be targeted, especially those sectors which more energy‐intensive causing
