Abstract Stable isotope analysis is one of the most widely used techniques to estimate trophic position and provides fundamental insight into structure management ecological communities. To account for effects geographic variation in levels, typically estimated relative an “baseline” (i.e., material representing variation) using a methodology such as formula or statistical analysis. There is, however, remarkable baselines methodologies from stable isotopes. The consequences this lack standardization are unknown but could result biased erroneous conclusions. We conducted literature review quantify Next, we assessed on individual species estimates food web by extracting published positions applying various existing data sets. identified 10 eight methodologies, use which varied ecosystem studied. Moreover, found that different yield significantly species, well conclusions about structure. Authors should avoid biological interpretations absolute, stand‐alone (as these prone number biases). recommend pairing with other more robust Increased sample size may mitigate some caused methodologies; alarmingly large proportion studies collected only at least group (41% all reviewed studies). collect minimum five samples per (but ten best practices) many groups possible increase power redundancy comparisons. Despite extensive studies revealing differences in the composition of aquatic assemblages between restored streams and natural or pre-restoration states, understanding ecological consequences trajectories stream restoration remains challenging. Food webs are an important way mapping biodiversity to ecosystem functioning by describing feeding linkages energy transfer pathways. Describing food can provide insights into restoration. This study analyzed unprecedented large quantity web data (more than 1700 webs) based on long-term (2008-2018) biomonitoring South Korea using a link extrapolation. By doing so, we aimed describe general patterns for reassembly streams. Specifically, 12 indices related structure robustness compared them with those First, species richness, numbers, density, connectance were all lower streams, indicating smaller less complexity. The assessment of restoration success often neglects trophic interactions within food webs, focusing instead on biodiversity and community structure. Here, we analysed the long-term recovery web structure based stable isotopes (δ13C δ15N) benthic invertebrates quantified responses metrics to time since restoration. samples derived from twelve restored sites with different ages, sampled annually 2012 2021, covering an investigation period up 28 years after for whole catchment. Abstract Co-occurring predators often exhibit ecological niche partitioning, resulting from competition over evolutionary time. However, in productive estuarine ecosystems with high resource availability, may occupy similar niches without conflict. Determining the degree of partitioning and overlap among co-occurring can provide insights into a food web’s function its potential resiliency to perturbations. This study used stable isotope analysis assess trophic ecology four Galveston Bay, Texas, USA: spotted seatrout, black drum, bull shark, alligator gar. Spatially distinct primary producer isotopic ratios emerged for both δ 13 C 15 N following salinity regimes, which translated patterns predator tissue. The volume species’ also varied spatially, species-specific expansion contraction across freshwater-marine continuum. observed were likely related movements, implications coupling landscape. Using regional delineations baseline values yielded position estimates that validated by compound-specific isotopes (3.77 3.96) all species but drum (3.25). Trophic increased body length these relationships differed when using estuary-wide versus regionally baselines. Alligator gar gut contents examined, primarily aligned piscivory included previously unreported taxa (insect, mammal). Collectively, results evidence spatial ontogenetic shifts within this assemblage highlight importance scale examine webs.

Abstract The movement and foraging patterns of consumers are a major driver nutrient energy distribution in ecosystems.
