Abstract Biodiversity plays a key role in supporting ecosystem services. Understanding this relationship sheds light on the linkages between ecological structure and functioning, thereby increasing capacity for effective strategies of conservation restoration. Focusing southwestern China, global biodiversity hotspot, we evaluated spatial correlations four regulating services one cultural service. We calculated critical points change each these categorized region into ‘threshold’, ‘sensitive’, ‘saturation’, ‘recession’ ‘low‐value’ areas. The results show that correlation was mainly positive Nujiang River Lancang basins Dayao Mountains, while negatively correlated with provisioning Qionglai Hengduan Mountains. slope value curve fitted biodiversity–ecosystem service relationships approximately 1 when species richness 50; corresponding areas were termed threshold pivotal zones relationships. These distributed Mountains Basin, should be prioritized monitoring protection. Synthesis applications : Our findings can help improve understanding spatially complex interactions multiple services, as well identifying protection restoration; they also contribute towards scientific framework integrated management policy general.

Ecological restoration holds great significance in addressing environmental degradation and rock desertification karst areas. Zoning strategy is a fundamental task understanding the interrelationship between human-environment to foster sustainable development. We explore “social-ecological” system conduct case study on region Guangdong Province, China. An evaluation framework consists of “development pressure”, “sensitivity status”, “resilience potential” was established. The results show that: regions with high pressure development are predominantly located high-density urban generally distribution comprehensive status index exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity. Regions low sensitivity found eastern western sides area. resilience values largely influenced by per capita energy-saving protection expenditures. zones mainly concentrated contiguous northwestern southern parts, covering more than half total conservation numerous primarily situated northern parts. By integrating socio-economic ecological factors, this proposes strategies for specific zones. It helps improve issues arising from complex interactions human-environment, facilitating implementation practices.

Abstract Global biodiversity is projected to further decline under a wide range of future socio-economic development pathways, even in sustainability oriented scenarios. This raises the question how can be put on path recovery, core challenge for CBD post-2020 global framework. We designed two contrasting, ambitious conservation strategies, ‘Half Earth’ (HE) and ‘Sharing Planet’ (SP), evaluated their ability restore terrestrial freshwater provide ecosystem services while also mitigating climate change ensuring food security. applied integrated assessment framework IMAGE with GLOBIO model, using ‘Middle Road’ Shared Socio-economic Pathway (SSP2) its human population growth as baseline. found that both strategies result reduction loss globally, but without additional measures achieve effective mitigation they will insufficient biodiversity. The HE strategy performs better protection (biodiversity intactness (MSA), Red List Index, geometric mean abundance) currently still natural regions, reflecting priorities. SP yields more improvements human-used areas, aquatic regulating (pest control, pollination, erosion control), regional However, ‘conservation only’ scenarios show considerable increase security risks (especially Sub-Saharan Africa) compared baseline limited temperature increase. Only when are combined efforts actions especially agricultural energy system into portfolio ‘integrated measures’, restoring current values or some improvement, keeping warming below degrees Minimizing wastes reducing consumption animal products crucial.

Tropical deep reefs (>30 m) are biologically and ecologically unique ecosystems with a higher geographic reach to shallow (<30 reefs. Yet they poorly understood rarely considered in conservation practices. Here, we characterise benthic fish communities across depth gradient (10-350 remote coral atolls Seychelles, Western Indian Ocean. Using taxonomic trait-based approaches present the functional composition of reef communities, distinct traits dominating different depths. Depth-related changes community metrics (taxa richness, abundance biomass) diversity (richness, dispersion, evenness) indicate complex relationships biological components (fish, benthos) that differ between These turn translate into patterns resilience against disturbance or species invasions depth. Notably, host on average fewer less abundant taxa but contribution originality scores, some which concern. Overall, results highlight nature requires their explicit consideration management activities.
