Freshwater ecosystems face a particularly high risk of biodiversity loss compared to marine and terrestrial systems. The use pesticides in agricultural fields is recognized as relevant stressor for freshwater environments, exerting negative impact worldwide on the overall status health communities. In present work, part Horizon 2020 funded SPRINT project, occurrence 193 pesticide residues was investigated 64 small water bodies distinct typology (creeks, streams, channels, ditches, rivers, lakes, ponds reservoirs), located regions with activity 10 European countries Argentina. Mixtures were detected all (20, median; 8-40 min-max). Total levels found ranged between 6.89 5860 ng/L, highlighting herbicides dominant type pesticides. Glyphosate compound highest median concentration followed by 2,4-D MCPA, lower degree dimethomorph, fluopicolide, prothioconazole metolachlor(-S). Argentina site total Netherlands, Portugal France. One or more exceeded threshold values established Water Framework Directive surface 9 out 11 case study sites (CSS), surpassed reference value 500 ng/L 8 CSS. Although only 5% (bifenthrin, dieldrin, fipronil sulfone, permethrin, terbutryn) individual denoted (RQ > 1), ratios estimated mixtures suggested potential environmental aquatic compartment studied.

Improved analytical methods can quantify hundreds of pesticide transformation products (TPs), but understanding TP occurrence and potential toxicity in aquatic ecosystems remains limited. We quantified 108 parent pesticides 116 TPs more than 3 700 samples from 442 small streams mostly urban basins across five major regions the United States. were detected nearly as frequently parents (90 95% streams, respectively); 102 at least once 28 >20% one region—TPs 9 herbicides, 2 fungicides (chlorothalonil thiophanate-methyl), 1 insecticide (fipronil) most detected. occurred commonly during baseflow conditions, indicating chronic environmental exposures to organisms likely importance groundwater a source. Hazard quotients based on acute aquatic-life benchmarks for invertebrates nonvascular plants vertebrate-centric molecular endpoints (sublethal effects) range contribution risk highlight several exposure–response data gaps. A precautionary approach using equimolar substitution or missing indicates that effects could be underestimated by an order magnitude more.

Neonicotinoid mixtures are common in streams worldwide, but corresponding ecological responses poorly understood. We combined experimental and observational studies to narrow this knowledge gap. The mesocosm experiment determined that concentrations of the neonicotinoids imidacloprid clothianidin (range exposures, 0 11.9 μg/liter) above hazard concentration for 5% species (0.017 0.010 μg/liter, respectively) caused a loss taxa abundance richness, disrupted adult emergence, altered trophodynamics, while two dose-dependent synergistic effects. In 85 Coastal California streams, were commonly detected [59% samples (n = 340), 72% streams], frequently occurred as (56% streams), potential toxicity was dominated by (maximum 1.92 2.51 μg/liter). Ecological field consistent with effects observed experiment, indicating neonicotinoid pose greater than expected risks stream health.

During water years (WY) 2013–2017, the U.S. Geological Survey, National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project, sampled Water Quality Network – Rivers and Streams (NWQN) year-round reported on 221 pesticides at 72 sites across United States in agricultural, developed, mixed land use watersheds. The Pesticide Toxicity Index (PTI) was used to estimate potential chronic acute toxicity three taxonomic groups fish, cladocerans, benthic invertebrates. For invertebrates (either invertebrates, or both), maximum PTI score exceeded predicted screening level 18 of (25%) some point during WY 2013–2017. a single pesticide compound found overwhelm other mixtures after concentrations were weighted. this study, about 71%, 72%, 92% Fish-, Cladoceran-, Benthic Invertebrate-PTI scores, respectively, had one primarily contributing sample (>50%). Pesticides pose a threat to the environment, but because of substantial number compounds, comprehensive assessment pesticides and an evaluation risk that they human aquatic life is challenging. In this study, improved analytical methods were used quantify 221 pesticide concentrations in surface waters over time period from 2013 2017. Samples collected 74 river sites conterminous US (CONUS). Potential toxicity was assessed by comparing water standard are considered have adverse effects on health or organisms. The majority use related agriculture, agricultural production varies across CONUS. Therefore, our results summarized region (Northeast, South, Midwest, West Pacific), with expectation crop differences would drive variability use, detection frequency, benchmark exceedance patterns. Although at least 2.5 times higher Midwest (49 kg km-2) than any other four regions West, Pacific, 3 21 average detected 1.5 (n = 25) 8 n 16), potential more evenly distributed. At 50% within each 5 had 1 chronic exceedance. Imidacloprid posed greatest total 245 exceedances 60 sites. These show persist environment beyond site application expected use. Continued monitoring research needed improve understanding life.
