Plastic products are widely used around the world, but waste plastic is not reasonably managed and causes serious pollution. Biodegradable plastics (BPs) provide an alternative to conventional plastics, all BPs can be completely degraded under natural conditions. Instead, they may break down into microplastics (MPs) faster than posing additional threat soil environment. In this paper, definition, applications, degradation behaviors of BPs, including biodegradable (BMPs), reviewed, we comprehensively summarized eco-toxicological effects BMPs in ecosystems, terms physical chemical properties soil, nutrient cycling, bacterial fungal communities, flora fauna. The compound other pollutants were also addressed. results revealed that made different or more severely compared MPs. Overall, review aims address gaps knowledge, shed light on ecological soil. a perfect substitute solve pollution, further exploration should focus their generation, environmental behavior, impact whether cause harm

Agricultural microplastic pollution has become a growing concern. Unfortunately, the impacts of microplastics (MPs) on agricultural soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics have not been sufficiently reported. In an attempt to remedy this, we conducted 105-day out-door mesocosm experiment in soil-plant system using sandy soils amended with two types MPs, low-density polyethylene (LDPE-MPs) biodegradable (Bio-MPs), at concentrations 0.0% (control), 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% 2.5% (w/w, weight ratio air-dry soil). Soil organic matter (SOM), dissolved (DOC), permanganate oxidizable (POXC), available (AN) N-NH4+ N-NO3−, (DON) were measured day 46 (D46) 105 (D105) experiment. SOM was also after mixed into (D0). For LDPE-MPs treatments, D0, D46 D105 showed no significant differences, while for Bio-MPs significantly (p < 0.05) decreased from D0 D46. Compared control, POXC = 0.001) lowered by 1.0% ≥ D105. effects DOC cycling. higher DON (on D105) ≥1.5% lower 0.02) AN D46). Overall, exerted stronger conclusion, might pose serious threats agroecosystems further research is needed.
