In this work, the application of EEM-PARAFAC (fluorescence excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor analysis) in water treatment processes, has been summarized. First, its most common use, characterization and monitoring dissolved organic matter (DOM) along freshwater ecosystems, drinking wastewater plants (DWTP WWTP, respectively), was reviewed. particular for DWWT/WWTP, effect towards different DOM fractions after adsorption, coagulation, biological/chemical processes or tertiary treatments (e.g. advanced oxidation processes), as well PARAFAC components scores (i.e. fluorescence intensity) correlation with disinfection by-products formation, were reported. On other hand, barely first time, we also reviewed emerging uses focused on studies, such as, simultaneous analysis several fluorescent CECs degradation (with concomitant formation major by-products), use decay to estimate certain removals, reactive oxygen species specific originating them, even study interactions between constituents. Therefore, aims extend economical, reagentless low time-consuming tool obtain further insight into compounds during mainly to: i) tentatively elucidate structural modifications target analyte (DOM CECs), ii) semi-quantitative data parent pollutants variation, iii) investigate plausible mechanistic aspects which are involved.

In a context of increasing water scarcity, it is essential to ensure an integrated watershed management, savings in the consumption as finite resource and improve performance wastewater treatment plants guarantee quality treated effluents. Therefore, advanced technologies for tertiary have been widely studied recent decades. These treatments reviewed over years mainly providing comparisons from technical perspective. However, there lack holistic evaluation considering environmental economic aspects together with aforementioned aspects. this review, alternatives micropollutant pathogen abatement identified based on implemented large scale (ozonation, ultraviolet treatment, adsorption activated carbon or membrane filtration) well those process implementation, such electrochemical, Fenton-based photocatalytic techniques. Thus, systematic bibliographic search was performed works applying pilot full-scale equipment, leaving lab-scale results out analysis. The description each allowed identification feasibility, operating costs associated impacts, comparative assessment that will help decision-making development application different technologies. benchmarking reveal selected should be chosen source specific pollutants present wastewater, no single solution micropollutants pathogens. addition, recommendations are presented publication reliable process-related data facilitate comparison between scenarios.
