Throughout the years, experiments with membrane, electrochemical, biological and thermal technologies have been explored to recover resources from a range of wastewaters such as municipal, industrial, urine sewage sludge. However, multiple resource recoveries at commercial pilot scale are still lacking, instead, focusing on specialising recovery narrow set products. Herein, divergence across municipal industrial wastewater streams – nutrients energy for municipal; heavy metals water streams; material seen both was observed through literature review. This review aims provide perspective academic professionals alike current available their emerging trends tie in these circular economics. Consequently, high sludge transportation costs may pressure treatment plants (WWTPs) adopt value-adding, onsite transforming centralised decentralised WWTPs into facilities.

The management and utilization of sludge in a sustainable approach require systematic analysis the environmental impacts generated from diverse treatment disposal processes. This study systematically assessed 12 common routes based on existing operating construction conditions representative projects China. We evaluated their using life cycle assessment following International Organization for Standardization (ISO 14040 ISO 14044), found that co-incineration, mono-incineration, anaerobic digestion with or without thermal hydrolysis may be useful terms simultaneously controlling pollution carbon emissions Therein, route co-incineration was recommended as best one because its human toxicity potential (-152.31 kg dichlorobenzene (1,4-DB) eq/ton dry solid (t DS)), freshwater ecotoxicity (FEP, -127.40 1,4-DB eq/t DS), terrestrial (TEP, -0.81 global warming (-27.26 CO2 DS) were all negative (environmental benefits). Furthermore, mono-incineration also negative, but it still needed to further enhance energy recovery reduce emissions. Despite combination had excellent emission attributes (-572.44 DS, -474.92 they showed serious FEP TEP owing heavy metals caused by subsequent land use digested sludge. Overall, this selected most suitable satisfy requirements reduction control China proposed optimizing suggestions future technical improvement development.

Due to the global trend of urbanization, amount sewage water is increasing in cities. This calls for efficient treatment resulting sludge. To date, 27 European Union member countries (EU-27), prevailing method application on arable land. Anaerobic digestion one methods being increasingly used nowadays. However, digestate requires further utilization. Therefore, this study, environmental performance composting, combustion, and pyrolysis options dewatered sludge evaluated based a life cycle assessment. The results show that combustion composting performed better than most selected impact categories. still under development, there are, some degree, uncertainties data related technology; thus, more information assessment required.
