Pesticides, which are associated with endocrine dysfunction, immunological dysregulation, and cancer, widespread sources of drinking water contamination. The state Paraná has a population 11 million, is the second largest grain producer in Brazil leading consumer pesticides. In this study, we analyzed extent contamination from proven, probable, or potentially carcinogenic pesticides (alachlor, aldrin-dieldrin, atrazine, chlordane, DDT-DDD-DDE, diuron, glyphosate-AMPA, lindane-γ-HCH, mancozeb-ETU, molinate, trifluralin) 127 grain-producing municipalities Paraná. Extensive was found, including legacy such as aldrin-dieldrin (mean 0.047 ppb), DDT-DDD-DDE (mean: 0.07), chlordane 0.181), lindane-HCH 2.17). Most were significantly above maximum limits for each one currently allowed (67% alachlor, 9.44% 96.85% 100% 80.31% 91.33% 12.6% trifluralin). Ninety-seven percent presented sum all at levels (189.84 ppb) European Union preconized (<0.5 ppb). Using mean pesticide concentration (ppb), exposed municipality, benchmark cancer risk pesticides, estimated minimum number cases attributable to pesticide-contaminated during period (total 542 cases). More than 80% attributed mancozeb-ETU diuron. Glyphosate-AMPA diuron-attributable strongly correlated total same (R = 0.8117 0.8138, respectively) well breast 0.7695 0.7551, respectively). Water detected city 0.58 p < 0.0001). These findings reveal extensive suggest that may increase region.

The increase and indiscriminate use of personal care products, food fertilizers, pesticides, health among others, have resulted/are resulting in extensive environmental contamination. Most these products contain traces widespread chemicals, usually known as emerging pollutants (EPs) or concern (PEC). Latin American (LA) region comprises 20 countries with different social cultural aspects, 81 % the population living urban areas. LA has some on top list users/consumers EPs, from pesticides fertilizers to products. However, there is a gap information related distribution EPs environment this region, very few existing review texts exploring issue. Therefore, present paper advances approach. An exhaustive literature review, selection 176 documents, provided unique up-to-date presence/distribution 17 classes legacy matrices (soil, sediment, water, air). study shows that wide recorded levels continental are potential risks human health, mainly through drinking water ingestion. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons deep public since they show carcinogenic properties. Several pollutants, like endocrine disruptors, caused harmful effects humans environment. Besides that, pharmaceutical compounds high consumption worldwide, being contamination real ongoing possibility. Finally, gaps future research needs deeply pointed out.

The use of pesticides in households and peri-urban areas the Amazon has increased notably during last years. Yet, presence these contaminants Amazonian freshwater ecosystems remains unexplored. Here, we assessed exposure to 18 5 transformation products River urban streams Manaus, Santarém, Macapá, Belém (Brazil). Pesticide concentrations were analyzed by liquid gas chromatography methods. Ecological risks following a two-tiered approach. First, hazard quotients an overall index calculated using toxicity data for standard test species primary producers, invertebrates, fish. Second, showing moderate-to-high ecological first tier evaluated Species Sensitivity Distributions (SSDs). Our study shows that are widespread Brazilian Amazon. frequency detection was higher than River, with some samples taken containing up 8 compounds. Most measured at relatively low (ng L-1), except malathion, carbendazim bulk concentration chlorpyrifos, which monitored above 100 ng L-1. Based on first-tier assessment, found invertebrates chlorpyrifos-methyl, moderate malathion risk assessment performed SSDs indicated high chlorpyrifos-methyl areas, 15% 5% invertebrate potentially affected, respectively. chlorpyrifos resulted (14-22% affected) main river (32-44%) impacted agriculture. We conclude pesticide residues may contribute biodiversity impact should be further particularly after heavy rainfall events.
