Abstract Background Bioaugmentation has the potential to enhance ability of ecological technology treat sulfonamide-containing wastewater, but low viability exogenous degraders limits their practical application. Understanding mechanism is important and optimize performance bioaugmentation, which requires a multifaceted analysis microbial communities. Here, DNA-stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP) metagenomic were conducted decipher bioaugmentation mechanisms in stabilization pond sediment microcosms inoculated with sulfamethoxazole (SMX)-degrading bacteria ( Pseudomonas sp. M2 or Paenarthrobacter R1). Results The both strains R1, especially strain significantly improved biodegradation rate SMX, its capacity was sustainable within certain cycle (subjected three repeated SMX additions). removal strategy using degrading also abated accumulation transmission risk antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Strain inoculation lowered bacterial diversity altered community, while R1 had slight effect on community closely associated indigenous microorganisms. identified as primary SMX-assimilating systems based DNA-SIP analysis. Combining genomic information pure culture evidence, enhanced by directly participating degradation, did it degradation stimulating SMX-degrading activity microorganisms ) community. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate that feasible for clean-up terms efficiency ARG transmission, well impact advantage highlighted.
