In recent decades, the advent of new technologies for massive and automatized digitization, together with availability methods DNA sequencing, strongly increased interest relevance herbarium collections study plant biodiversity evolution. These approaches prompted projects aimed at creation a large dataset molecular phenological data. This review discusses challenges opportunities herbaria in context numerous national that are currently ongoing, prompting specimens understanding loss habitat shifts as consequence climate changes destruction due to human activities. With regard this, National Biodiversity Future Center (active Italy since 2022) started large-scale digitization project Herbarium Centrale Italicum Florence (Italy), which is most important Italian botanical collection, consisting more than 4 million samples present.

Understanding the patterns of plant invasions across vegetation types and identifying underlying drivers for such is essential to prioritize sites effective management invasive species. We sampled three forest (Shorea robusta, Dalbergia sissoo, Tropical deciduous riverine forest) two grasslands in south-central Nepal evaluate richness naturalized alien species (IAPS). Species IAPS among within each physiographic region was compared using analysis variance t-test, ordination used analyze species-environment relations. Of total 327 vascular plants recorded, 14% were naturalized, over a third invasive. Grasslands had highest IAPS. In contrast, S. robusta lowest richness. Naturalized increased with native Ordination revealed that high number associated areas exposed frequent fire livestock grazing close human settlements. The results suggest closer settlements disturbance are vulnerable establishment Early detection control frequently disturbed could prevent their spread into surrounding landscapes.

Invasive alien plants (IAPs) are a great challenge for biodiversity conservation and management. Multi-temporal landscape analysis has potential describing plant invasion, however solutions accounting of dynamics still limited. This research aims to explore the spatial-temporal pattern IAP Carpobrotus spp. in relation with changes on Mediterranean coastal dunes. Based detailed multi-temporal local land cover maps, we described dune invaded areas using transition matrices. We then calculated set non-redundant class metrics compared data maps explored invasion trends through trajectory analysis. analyzed relationship between spatial over time (e.g., expansion or reduction) by examining temporal delta values indices metrics, machine learning technique followed Partial Dependence The characteristics patches contextual varied across tracts experiencing reduction. expanded more numerous, bigger connected stable seashore increasing artificial surfaces. Effective conservation planning requires identifying priority hotspots to allocate resources. To preserve biodiversity, it is crucial consider α, β and γ-diversity protect the irreplaceable sites with high ecological uniqueness, which can host uncommon species assemblages that would be lost if only species-rich were protected. Coastal dunes, hosting highly specialized plant communities, are among most threatened ecosystems worldwide. In this study, we identified assess effectiveness of network protected areas in coastal dunes Tuscany (central Italy), using data on communities collected 506 plots. We additively partitioned its α components, observing a significant variation at all spatial levels for dune species. terms α-diversity, found Northern richer species, while synanthropic alien equally present inside outside region. By partitioning total β-diversity into components (replacement richness difference), prevalence replacement indicating unique as ones favor conservation. Unique through Local Contributions Beta Diversity their value was determined by composition relationship landscape variables. partly protected, some altered required restoration. Our approach proved effective sites, issues existing network, providing valuable information prioritize future actions.

Coastal ecosystems, encompassing land and marine environments hosting substantial biodiversity, are among the most threatened worldwide. The European Habitats Directive prioritises coastal habitats species, requiring legislative, direct protection, monitoring, informational measures. Accurate habitat species monitoring is crucial to conservation efforts, yet biodiversity research in complex, ever-changing like areas difficult. Citizen Science may bridge assessment eco-friendly by incorporating non-scientists into data collection for scientists stakeholders. A approach supported a dedicated iNaturalist project (called Wild Coast CASCADE) was implemented obtain complete framework that includes observations of many taxa terrestrial, aquatic, transitional dynamic Central Italian Adriatic coast. We explored gathered focusing on IUCN Red List concern, non-native species. Between 2020 2023, we collected 3784 records covering 742 with 81% meeting “research grade criteria”, these were retained subsequent research. volunteers have 291 georeferenced animal from global List, 51 plant 14 indicators presence Conservation Concern, 44 plants animals. Our results provide evidence citizen projects can effectively assist coastal–marine They also underline potential emphasize importance public engagement efforts.
