Abstract The electrode played an essential role in the operation of CW-MFC system due to its synergistic effect, and development strategy has promoted application since 2012. In this paper, according material quantity, types were distinctly divided into unified model, composited modified multi-electrodes model combined with non-conductive or conductive particle. Different strategies provided improve performance towards electricity generation, removal pollutants, control greenhouse gas emission, coordination mechanism was further reviewed. Furthermore, process summarized, low-cost, sustainable, innovated materials emphatically recommended. For scale-up application, multi-electrode systematically reviewed based on optimizing material, shape, spacing distance, connection type electrode. This review may provide guidance maximize advantages applications. Graphical

The biocurrent generated by soil extracellular electron transfer (EET) partly drives biogeochemical cycles and controls quality. However, it is unclear how the abiotic biotic conditions affect conduction. In this study, response relationship of microenvironment in-situ was studied. results showed that red exhibited optimal efficiency, as evidenced maximum current density accumulated charge output, with increments 56–93 % 80–2800 %, respectively, compared other five types soils. Soil physicochemical properties were most important factor on generation, further quantity bioavailability dissolved organic matter, NH4+-N content, lower pH predictive indicators for exoelectrogenic processes addition, high likely determined a complex synergistic network transformation carbon nitrogen, electroactive bacteria involving functions cell wall/membrane cytochrome enzyme metabolism transport related EET process. Overall, we provide an insight into among conduction, properties, community metabolic function, support bioelectrochemical technology application.
