The global generation of bauxite residue necessitates environmentally responsible disposal strategies. This study investigated the long-term (5-year) behavior whose pH was lowered to 8.5, called modified (MBR), using lysimeters test various configurations: raw MBR or used (UMBR) previously applied for acid mine drainage remediation, sand soil capping, and revegetation. Throughout experiment across all configurations, leachates stabilized between 7 8 their salinity decreased. Their low sodium absorption ratio (SAR) indicated minimal risk material clogging suitability salt-tolerant plant growth. Leaching potentially toxic elements, except vanadium, decreased rapidly after first year levels. Leachate concentrations consistently remained below LD50 Hyalella azteca were at least an order magnitude lower by experiment’s end, first-year chromium. Sand capping performed poorly, while revegetation slightly increased leaching, though these negligible given final leaching Revegetated shows promise as a suitable sustainable solution managing residues, provided is maintained above 6.5. highlights importance assessments appropriate management strategies disposal.

Abstract Purpose Long-term weathering promotes the development of microbial communities and increased diversity in bauxite residue. However, effect different vegetation cover on stability community are still poorly understood. Methods In this study, residue samples from three typical including Artemisia (BA), Cynodon (BC), Hedysarum (BH) were collected a deposit area. Illumina high-throughput sequencing technology was applied to determine Results Residues vegetated sites exhibited lower alkalinity higher nutrients level, as well biomass activities, suggesting that plant encroachment significantly multifunctionality addition, also induced enhanced network stability. Furthermore, our results showed positive correlated with promoted functional bacterial assemblages (mostly Rhizobiaceae, Blastocatellaceae, Acidobacteriaceae, Sphingonmonadaceae, Frankiaceae), which core species network. Conclusions Plant could increase stability, thus promote elevation Frankiaceae played important roles promotion Our highlight necessity conserving augmenting abundance ensure stable provision ecosystem functions disposal areas.
