Excess phosphorus (P) is considered a leading cause of eutrophication, and identifying the P source essential for remediation. A small eutrophic lake (Lake Carmi) in northern Appalachian region North America has experienced summer cyanobacteria blooms decades, despite extensive research water quality management that reduced surface sources P, conditions within have not improved. In fact, they appear to be worsening, suggesting significant been identified addressed.
