Excess phosphorus (P) is considered a leading cause of eutrophication, and identifying the P source essential for remediation. A small eutrophic lake (Lake Carmi) in northern Appalachian region North America has experienced summer cyanobacteria blooms decades, despite extensive research water quality management that reduced surface sources P, conditions within have not improved. In fact, they appear to be worsening, suggesting significant been identified addressed. This study reports on an integrated assessment including (1) experimental empirical analysis effect temperature internal loading (2) quantifying groundwater transport empirically (monitoring wells) by modeling (MODFLOW), (3) published data atmospheric inputs. External watershed are responsible annual increases (from ~ 10 26 ppb) trigger algal blooms; data, however, shows strong correlation between dissolved water, isolating demonstrates key role cycling. Results indicate column contact with sediments was 246% greater after week at 20 °C when compared 5 °C. The upper cm contain average 701 mg/kg (ppm) which 324 (45 %) labile, providing reaches flux 6.1 kg/day into as temperatures warm across threshold 21-23 oC. Lacking remediation limit release from sediments, these results potential worsening eutrophication face projected warming trends existing burden watershed.
