Abstract Subseasonal droughts including flash have occurred frequently in recent years, which are accompanied by heatwaves or wildfires that raise a wide concern on environmental risk. However, the changing characteristics of subseasonal drought propagation, and possible climate drivers remain unknown. This study quantifies propagation from meteorological to soil using Copula‐based Bayesian framework, shows higher risks mainly occur more humid regions with denser vegetation cover. Trends risk vary regionally, global increase 2%/decade ( p < 0.01) during 1980–2022. Vegetation greening warming key over >71% vegetated lands, mean contribution rates 39.5% 36.5% respectively. Other climatic factors vapor pressure deficit precipitation also paly critical roles, closely correlate temperature vegetation. These findings highlight importance dynamics.

The Nile River Basin (NRB) has experienced a notable rise in drought episodes recent decades. propagation of meteorological, agricultural, and groundwater dynamics the NRB was investigated this study. following indices examined correlation among droughts. These are standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), soil moisture index, Gravity Recovery Climate Experiment, GRACE Follow-On (GRACE/GRACE-FO)-derived (GGDI). droughts were comprehensively evaluated from 2003 to 2022. cross-wavelet transform approach highlighted links between key findings: (1) In NRB, energy spectrum wavelet coherence can indicate internal connection meteorological versus (vs.) agricultural drought. time scale with most significant coefficient is time. (2) El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) correlated much more than Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), demonstrating that ENSO an important impact on advancement. (3) R2 values 0.68 for GGDI vs. (SSI), 0.71 Blue Region (BNR) SSI, 0.55 SSI Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Similarly, Lake Victoria (LVR), 0.51 SPEI 0.55, but Bahr-el-Ghazal (BER), 0.61 0.27 during whole research period varied lag durations ranging 1 6 months. Thus, (i.e., drought) potential reshape our understanding evolution, which could lead early forecasting across similar climatic regions.

The exogenous application of melatonin by the root drenching method is an effective way to improve crop drought resistance. However, optimal concentration and physiological mechanisms underlying melatonin-induced tolerance in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) roots remain elusive. This study determined explored protective effects on roots. results showed that 50 μmol L−1 was significantly mitigated inhibitory effect seedling growth. Exogenous promoted development drought-stressed plants remarkably increasing length, projected area, surface volume, diameter, biomass. Melatonin also drought-weakened photosynthetic capacity regulated endogenous hormone contents regulating relative expression levels hormone-synthesis genes under stress. Melatonin-treated seedlings maintained enzymatic non-enzymatic antioxidant capacities, produced relatively lower reactive oxygen species malondialdehyde, thus reducing stress damage (such as mitochondrial damage). Moreover, alleviated yield fiber length declines caused Taken together, these findings show with increases enhancing induced In summary, provide a foundation for field method.

In the context of climate warming, flash drought has become increasingly frequent, posing significant threats to agriculture, ecosystems, and environment. Xinjiang, located in an arid semi-arid region, necessitates a thorough investigation into distinctions between traditional drought, as well exploration driving forces behind both types drought. this study, soil moisture data from ERA5-Land were utilized construct framework for identification based on historical events. The Geodetector was employed explore factors that influence spatial heterogeneity these two forms. findings illuminate (1) terms distribution, predominated southern while exhibited greater prominence northern Xinjiang. (2) Regarding changes trends, increasing trend frequency since 1990s, with passing significance test (α ≤ 0.05). Additionally, severity displayed noteworthy statistically increase within sliding windows ranging 46 62 years. (3) Concerning forces, precipitation emerged principal force Furthermore, human activities exerted more substantial interactions involving had potential significantly amplify explanatory power types. (4) risk, notable variation risk observed across various ecological zones, highest occurring mildly fragile zones. when comparing results 1995 2019, marked severely This study enriches understanding dynamics Xinjiang carries important implications enhancing precision monitoring early warning systems.
