How Do Microplastics Affect Carbon and Nitrogen Cycling in Soil-Plant Systems? DOI

Published: Jan. 1, 2024

Microplastics (MPs) have widespread influencing ecosystem functions, including carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling, thereby disrupting climate change threating agriculture productivity. However, how MPs impacts C N cycling within plant-soil system is still poorly understood. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis utilizing 3338 paired observations from 180 publications to comprehensively estimate the effects of on plant growth, in soil content, emissions, content losses. Results showed that compared references, pollution significantly increased TC, SOC, MBC, DOC CO2 by 53.3%, 25.4%, 19.6%, 24.7% 25.7%, respectively cycling; decreased NO3--N NH3 volatilization 14.7% 43.3% cycling. Meanwhile, belowground biomass, whereas no significant changes were detected content. Furthermore, C, growth varied depending MP types, sizes, concentrations, experimental durations, part influenced initial properties. Overall, although contributed sink capacity current study, they may present serious threat agricultural production future.
