Hg is considered as the most toxic metal in environment. Sources of environment include burning fossil fuels, waste, and forest fires. The long residence time gaseous form atmosphere allows mercury to be transported over distances. pelagic tunicate Salpa thompsoni an important component Antarctic Over past few decades expansion this species higher latitudes has been noted, mainly due ongoing climate change. study material consisted samples S. individuals, collected waters surrounding Elephant Island (Western Antarctic). Total five its fractions were determined. Whole organisms analyzed well internal organs: stomachs, muscle strips, tunics. Obtained results showed that highest concentrations salps observed stomachs. With fraction results, it can concluded main route exposure presumably absorption from food-filtered organic non-organic particles. Moreover, process transformation simple soluble forms into stomachs intestines distribution other tissues was observed.

Mercury (Hg) biomonitoring requires a precise understanding of the internal processes contributing to disparities between Hg sources in environment and measured biota. In this study, we investigated use stable isotopes trace accumulation Adélie emperor penguin chicks from four breeding colonies Antarctica. Interspecific variation Δ199Hg reflects distinct foraging habitats exposures adults. Chicks at sites where adult penguins predominantly consumed mesopelagic prey showed relatively lower values than that were primarily fed epipelagic krill. Substantial δ202Hg variations chick tissues observed both species (Adélie: −0.11 1.13‰, emperor: −0.27 1.15‰), whereas only exhibited lowest liver highest feathers. Our results indicate tissue-specific their positive correlations with % MeHg resulted demethylation kidneys chicks, different responses depending on exposure dietary MeHg. This study highlights importance considering intra- interspecific ecology when selecting for biomonitoring.
