This study evaluated galvanostatic three-dimensional electrolysis using ceramic carbon foam anodes for the removal of emerging pollutants from wastewater and assessed transformation product formation. Five (paracetamol, triclosan, bisphenol A, caffeine, diclofenac) were selected based on their detection in treatment plant effluents. Electrochemical oxidation was carried out artificial spiked with these compounds under conditions (50, 125, 250 mA) a stainless steel tube electrolyzer three cathode. Decreasing pollutant concentrations observed all experiments. Nontarget chemical analysis liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometer detected 338 features increasing intensity including 12 confirmed products (TPs). Real effluent then electrolyzed, again showing removal, 9 previously identified TPs present increasing. Two (benzamide 2,4-dichlorophenol) are known toxicants, indicating formation potential toxic by-product during electrolysis. Furthermore, unspiked real revealed five pharmaceuticals drug metabolite. While demonstrating electrolysis' ability degrade wastewater, underscores need investigate toxicity implications process.

Emerging contaminants and their transformation products are widely distributed in the environment. These pollutants carry unknown risks owing to persistence, migration, toxicity. The wide variety complex structures of these substances render them difficult identify using only target analysis. Suspect screening analysis can more than a single run.
