In this study, we aimed to quantify the presence of microplastics (MPs) in stomachs large pelagic fish (swordfish, Xiphias gladius, Linnaeus, 1758) sampled western Mediterranean Sea, and assess temporal trends (2011-2012 vs. 2017-2019) MP ingestion. MPs were extracted from characterized by μ-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Results highlighted ingestion 39 out 49 analysed. Ingested consisted mostly small (<1 mm) fibers (88.6 %, mean ± standard deviation = 2.5 6.1 particles per stomach), with a greater frequency occurrence (FO) second period (FO 90 3.3 8.0 stomach). The predominant colours purple, black blue, polyethylene terephthalate was most frequently detected polymer. These results are crucial for development management actions at conservation swordfish Sea prevention health risks humans.

The goal of this project is to assess the state marine biodiversity in Natura 2000 network Spain and analyze impact fishing policies on it. study focuses three demarcations Spain: North Atlantic, South Strait Gibraltar Alborán Sea. research uses DPSIR (Drivers Change-Pressure-State-Impact-Response) framework, a multi-criteria analysis approach understand relationships between loss, fishing, ecosystem integrity, provision services. Our results revealed significant decline since 1985 four areas studied; loss was more pronounced Gulf Cadiz (in Andalusia) less intense northern regions (Galicia Asturias). This trend aligns with global degradation ecosystems caused by human activities. main drivers behind are economic factors promoting industrial overexploitation. However, there has been reduction fleet 2000s, supported European Maritime Fisheries Fund for transitioning toward sustainable methods. Abstract In various parts of the world, fisheries sector is undergoing a rapid transition due to combination ecological and economic stressors. this context, there growing interest in employing integrated ecological-economic tools that facilitate adoption ecosystem-based practices within value chain perspective. These aim contribute find management options decrease impacts while increasing socioeconomic benefits. Our study integrates food-web model with value-chain for an area Mediterranean Sea. This case may provide valuable insights decision-makers: 1) it allows calculation indicators go beyond species evaluation incomes, which are relevant assessing management; 2) offers more comprehensive perspective on what should be considered priority their key characteristics; 3) supports identification actors generates pertinent information use vertically decision-making initiatives.

Globally, all marine ecosystems are under pressure by anthropogenic stressors. However, semi-enclosed seas at a greater risk of degradation due to their limited connectivity open seas. This leads accumulation pollutants and abrupt regime shifts triggered unsustainable exploitation living resources, as exhibit low degrees redundancy more frequent large-scale episodic events such harmful algal blooms. The Sea Marmara is region that has been subjected various stressors since the 1990s. Recently, local governmental authorities have employed basin-wide ecosystem management plans control manage point nonpoint (diffuse) sources pollutants. fisheries in relation dynamics food web attracted less attention from policymakers, even though one most significant pressures. In this study, we capitalized on previous static model revising extending it simulate changes between 1990 2020. We delineated temporal terms structure function using ecological indicators developed quantitative advice for its fisheries. results showed experienced three regimes 1990, with occurring onset 2000s mid 2010s. first exhibited high diversity material cycling, second was characterized increased impact fisheries, third culminated fished-down state. analysis fishery majority harvested species were overexploited. suggest implementation quotas exploited should be considered an immediate solution fish stocks can help restore conditions.
