In light of the substantial global production biomass waste, effective waste management and energy recovery solutions are paramount importance. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) anaerobic digestion (AD) have emerged as innovative techniques for converting into valuable resources. Their integration creates a synergistic framework that mitigates inherent limitations, leading to improved efficiency, enhanced product quality, comprehensive utilization biomass. This review paper investigates HTL AD, highlighting its significance potential benefits well optimal sequencing (HTL followed by AD HTL). The encompasses experimental procedures, factors influencing both options, characterizations, final outcomes, toxicological assessments discussions on reduction. Additionally, it delves transition towards circular bioeconomy discusses challenges opportunities intrinsic these processes. findings presented in this offer insights shape future research evolving field.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising thermo-chemical technology for municipal sludge treatment due to its potential biocrude oil recovery and minimizing biosolids management costs. However, the process generates high volume of an aqueous byproduct that needs be treated chemical oxygen demand (COD) various organic inorganic compounds. Although phase known contain recalcitrant potentially inhibitory substances may affect biological treatment, their molecular weight distribution (MwD) impact on anaerobic biodegradability are poorly understood. Ultrafiltration (UF) was conducted fractionate HTL into different (Mw) fractions using 300, 100, 10, 1 kDa membranes. Mesophilic biochemical methane (BMP) assays were assess each fraction, first-order model used calculate degradation kinetics The highest percentage organics (65%) found in Mw<1 range, whereas 10>Mw>1 had lowest (8%). There no significant difference cumulative specific produced from Mw (p>0.05). fraction production rate (0.53 day−1), unfiltered (0.38 day−1). UF fractionation increased observed only 55% theoretical value. This implies 45 % COD remains undegraded even after permeation through cut-off membrane. Therefore, further characterization needed compounds with weights below fully understand nature digestion. Furthermore, pretreatments utilizing techniques such as adsorption advanced oxidation necessary enhance yields fractions, thereby bringing them closer yield.

To produce high-quality slurry fuel from petroleum coke and municipal sludge, the effects of various biomass materials on characteristics were investigated experimentally. The used in this experiment classified into three categories: monosaccharides (e.g., glucose), starch-based potato residue), cellulose-based corn straw, water hyacinth, rice husk, kelp). results revealed significant variations properties influenced by different types their respective proportions. Increasing content led to a decrease solid concentration bubble sludge (bubble-PCSS). However, reduction was moderate with biomass, whereas it pronounced especially kelp. addition significantly improved pseudoplastic rheological slurry. Specifically, when incorporated, flow characteristic index approached 0.7. Optimal stability bubble-PCSS achieved at 2% level biomass. In contrast, using such as kelp, husks, they required 3-4% reach optimal stability, which somewhat less favorable than that
