The North China Plain (NCP) serves as the main grain production land in China, functioning a critical region for ensuring China’s food security. To address multifaceted challenges confronting security NCP, study embarked on comprehensive analysis of synergistic interactions between agricultural water usage, carbon emissions, and ecosystem health. By proposing footprint family indicators using bottom-up IPCC coefficient approach, this quantitatively evaluates spatial–temporal changes water–carbon–ecological footprints NCP from 2003 to 2020. Furthermore, coupling coordination degree model that focuses is established. findings are follows: (1) total showed striking increasing trend with an increase 1.52 × 1011 m3, increased by 1.27 109 t, significant ecological impacts. (2) NCP’s exhibited “M”-shaped trend. structure maintained stable negligible proportion footprints. (3) water, carbon, ecology high, revealing noteworthy interaction effect. This research can provide data support effective resources allocation sustainable social–economic development, offering reasonable insights formulate more scientific policies green transition use civilization construction.

Exploring the coordination of agricultural water resources (W), cultivated land (L), and ecoenvironment (E) system is crucial for sustainable agriculture in North China Plain (NCP). However, synergistic effects this composite remain unclear. Coupling degrees (CCDs) 53 cities NCP years 2011, 2015, 2020 were evaluated using TOPSIS model, coupling combined with analytic hierarchy process entropy weight method. The evaluation results further analyzed to identify obstacle factors. findings reveal following: (1) comprehensive development level showed a fluctuating upward trend, closeness values ranging from 0.418 0.574 2020, indicating an improvement 14.6–52.3% compared 2011. coefficient variation (CV) each province rose 12.65% 2011 13.64% subsequently declined 9.12% by 2020. (2) Between CCDs W–L–E exhibited consistent trend. In regions intermediate or better accounted 34.0%, primarily located Jiangsu Province, southern part Anhui northwestern Shandong municipalities Beijing Tianjin. (3) significant factors included quality compliance rate per capita disposable income rural residents, although these not primary obstacles supply modulus multiple cropping index major Developing water-appropriate patterns based on regional resource endowment essential path coordinated water, land, ecology NCP.
