Abstract Experimental streams (ESs) are enclosures of fluvial ecosystems designed as flume microcosms to simulate flowing waters and assess environmental disturbances on aquatic communities' structure function under controlled conditions. This study presents an ES system that combines ecological relevance with reliability in a compact design, offering rapid responses iron ore tailings. The used periphyton biofilm bioindicator recirculating microcosm over 65 d. Periphyton is key bioindicator, representing critical metabolic processes such primary production. includes artificial glass channels, microscope slide substrates, pumps. It was developed replicates, three controls, treatments, each consisting main channel water reservoir, for total volume 10.0 L. Six sampling campaigns evaluated quality indicators acute, short, long‐term exposures. system's ensured by standardizing setup conditions, maintaining river properties, ensuring uniform flow, sampling. Realism achieved renewing large volumes, regular inoculation propagules, the appropriate frequency quality. results showed ES, simple low‐cost (US$569), sensitive throughout exposure period. approach practical assessing various stressors.
