The use of decentralized wastewater treatment technologies is a reasonable solution for rural areas. As technology, the multi-soil-layering (MSL) system has recently drawn an increasing amount attention owing to its merits, such as high hydraulic load rate, small land area occupation, low probability clogging, investment, and operation cost. This review summarizes progress in MSL systems past decade, focusing on directions efforts optimization, latest applications various treatments, integration with other technologies. great application potential illustrated, future research regarding better are provided.
