Abstract Marine carbonate production and dissolution are important components of the global carbon cycle marine alkalinity budget. Global by fish (ichthyocarbonate) has been estimated to be as high 9.03 Pg CaCO 3 yr −1 ; however, fate ichthyocarbonate is poorly understood. High magnesium concentrations in would traditionally suggest rapid under current conditions, but a correlation between rate mol%MgCO not observed. Here, we aim determine role organic coatings on rates environments. We applied combination petrographic, geochemical, microCT approaches assess quantity distribution matter produced two species fish, Gulf toadfish ( Opsanus beta ) Olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus ). show that matter, including external embedded material, volumetrically significant, ranging from 8.5% 32.3% volume. Bleach oxidation increased more than an order magnitude, suggesting these serve reduce reactive surface area mineral fraction ichthyocarbonate. Assuming do influence sinking rates, extend depth persistence water column ∼12–15×. Therefore, determinant cycle.
