Clays are fundamental raw materials in the ceramics industry due to their plasticity, mineralogical composition, and thermal behavior. This study characterizes four clay samples from Bustos (Portugal), aiming assess suitability for ceramic applications through granulometric, geochemical, mineralogical, technological assays, looking at aspects such as plasticity sintering A textural analysis of revealed distinct granulometric profiles, being dominated by silty–clayey fractions low amounts coarse particles, indicating high potential. Three showed an alkaline pH (8.17–8.63), one acidic (5.11), which can significantly influence rheology firing behavior body. Samples had a predominance phyllosilicate minerals, followed quartz magnetite–maghemite, trace feldspars, anatase, bassanite, siderite. In fraction, smectite, illite, kaolinite were identified. By combining classical techniques with technology principles, this contributes sustainable development local industries, emphasizing importance characterizing natural industrial applications. The tests strong workability two samples, exhibited values moldability, making them suitable shaping processes production. Also, that same clays good densification during firing, relatively shrinkage.

As mineral resources become increasingly scarce and environmental awareness grows, mining companies urgently need cost-effective environmentally friendly filling methods for mines. The use of ultrafine tailings combined with various binders at different ratios plays a key role in determining the rheological properties mechanical strength cemented paste backfill. This paper provides parameter basis design mine system, firstly, materials proportions were selected, basic physicochemical property tests, along cementitious material analysis, conducted to determine physical chemical composition materials. Next, properties, transport performance, bleeding characteristics slurry tested assess feasibility process requirements self-flow through pipelines. results indicated that transportation performance was better when gelling powder used as binder. Finally, compressive, shear, tensile strengths blocks under varying mass concentrations cement-tailings curing times. helped identify optimal concentration needed meet structure. final study found sample ratio 1:6, 68%, binder reached after 28 days. research offers valuable insights other seeking implement similar sustainable technologies, promoting wider adoption advancements field.
