The soil microbiome plays an important role in forest functioning. However, the impact of drought-induced dieback and tree death on microbial biomass, community structure, functional composition is unknown. We also lack understanding how microbiota varies seasonally such declining stands. used Phospholipid Fatty Acids (PLFA) analysis to quantify biomass study its seasonal changes three Mediterranean forests showing dominated by pine species (Pinus halepensis Mill, Pinus pinaster Ait. sylvestris L.). measured microclimatic parameters physical chemical under trees with different vigor, assessed as canopy defoliation degree, related them community. found marked differences total relative abundance major groups among forests. First, peaked either dry summer (P. halepensis) or autumn P. sylvestris). Accordingly, most groups, excluding Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, displayed substantial variation between seasons. In addition, fungi Gram-positive bacteria exhibited opposite pattern compared actinomycetes Gram-negative bacteria. Second, had a significant within-site PLFA variation, although their influence was less than that variation. Third, defoliated healthy were minor restricted averaged ratios markers. Overall, vary considerably stand types seasons ongoing high mortality. while dynamics show predictable patterns, which should be accounted for future studies, highly variable mainly depends parameters.
