Scientifically identifying the impact of urban development levels on ecological environment in China’s grassland regions from a classification perspective is crucial for stabilizing ecosystems and optimizing cities. Using Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as case study, this research constructs conceptual analysis framework coordinated state between level based theory dual economic structures. Employing Granger causality test, nonlinear fitting, coupling coordination degree model methods, heterogeneity areas 2000 to 2020 are comprehensively analyzed. The findings reveal following: (1) Capital-type central cities growing resource-based cities, with high development, positively nurture ecology, exhibit labor mobility, experience low endogenous exogenous pressures, resulting coordination. (2) Pure agro-pastoral levels, negatively have face (3) Regional moderate exert neutral counterbalance effect opposing leading (4) When relationship ranges “positive-neutral-negative,” pressures ecology by declining developing determined their specific showing variations “large → balance small” “small large,” fluctuating “high-moderate-low”. (5) Special less affected foundation. Analyzing heterogeneous different types significant improving overall quality exploring distinctive models.
