Posidonia oceanica egagropiles: Good indicators for plastic pollution in coastal areas?

Plastic is ubiquitous within the global marine environment, essentially becoming part of environment and ecology these ecosystems. In Mediterranean ecosystems seagrass meadows Posidonia oceanica provide key ecosystem services like preventing coastal erosion slowing down water flow velocity acting as sediment traps. Recent studies have reported how for sediments particles, could be also retaining plastic items in their internal structures. this study, a total 93 egagropiles were collected floating at sea two areas Balearic Islands during summer season 2017. Once laboratory perimeter each was measured plastics inside them visually sorted under stereomicroscope to identify whether structure. Results indicate that 30 % from eastern coast Mallorca (Cala Ratjada) contained plastics, while only 13 northern (Can Picafort) had them. addition, identified been validated with ATR-FTIR spectroscopy indicating different polymeric composition, mainly polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene are organic study important since it transference along habitats.
