Due
to
its
short
half-life
(87
days),
naturally
occurring
radio-sulfur
(35S)
is
applicable
as
aqueous
environmental
tracer
for
investigating
groundwater
residence
times
shorter
than
one
year.
Being
a
pure
β-decaying
radionuclide,
35S
detected
straightforwardly
by
means
of
liquid
scintillation
counting
(LSC).
The
rather
low
activities
in
natural
waters
require
(i)
careful
sample
preparation
aiming
at
extracting
35SO42-
from
large-volume
water
samples
(ca.
20
L)
resulting
ready
LSC
measurement
and
(ii)
an
optimal
device-specific
setup
the
maximize
signal-to-noise-ratio.
A
few
publications
that
discuss
approaches
optimization
are
available.
This
paper
presents
summarizing
step-by-step
instruction
both
optimized
setup.
For
practical
reasons,
two
different
presented,
with
total

ABSTRACT
This
study
investigates
the
hydrological
processes
driving
groundwater
recharge
in
Avignon
Plain
(south‐eastern
France)
through
a
detailed
analysis
of
interactions
between
irrigation,
rainfall
and
soil
water
using
long‐term
isotopic
monitoring
lumped
parameter
modelling.
More
than
15
years
monthly
data
from
rainwater,
surface
water,
were
analysed
to
quantify
contributions
gravity‐fed
irrigation
natural
aquifer
recharge.
Our
results
show
that
contributes
about
85%
recharge,
highlighting
significant
role
traditional
agricultural
practices
maintaining
levels.
Through
tracing
modelling,
we
observed
variations
transit
times,
with
faster
infiltration
pathways
associated
flows
compared
more
prolonged
rainfall.
not
only
demonstrates
effectiveness
techniques
for
assessing
sources
complex
scenarios
but
also
provides
insights
into
how
affect
sustainability.
These
contribute
current
thinking
on
sustainable
management
highlight
need
integrated
approaches
reconcile
use
efficiency
conservation.
