Due to its short half-life (87 days), naturally occurring radio-sulfur (35S) is applicable as aqueous environmental tracer for investigating groundwater residence times shorter than one year. Being a pure β-decaying radionuclide, 35S detected straightforwardly by means of liquid scintillation counting (LSC). The rather low activities in natural waters require (i) careful sample preparation aiming at extracting 35SO42- from large-volume water samples (ca. 20 L) resulting ready LSC measurement and (ii) an optimal device-specific setup the maximize signal-to-noise-ratio. A few publications that discuss approaches optimization are available. This paper presents summarizing step-by-step instruction both optimized setup. For practical reasons, two different presented, with total sulphate inventories (up 350 mg) elevated (350-1500 mg). types described three devices, namely Quantulus GCT, TriCarb 3170 TR/SL, LB 1220.

ABSTRACT This study investigates the hydrological processes driving groundwater recharge in Avignon Plain (south‐eastern France) through a detailed analysis of interactions between irrigation, rainfall and soil water using long‐term isotopic monitoring lumped parameter modelling. More than 15 years monthly data from rainwater, surface water, were analysed to quantify contributions gravity‐fed irrigation natural aquifer recharge. Our results show that contributes about 85% recharge, highlighting significant role traditional agricultural practices maintaining levels. Through tracing modelling, we observed variations transit times, with faster infiltration pathways associated flows compared more prolonged rainfall. not only demonstrates effectiveness techniques for assessing sources complex scenarios but also provides insights into how affect sustainability. These contribute current thinking on sustainable management highlight need integrated approaches reconcile use efficiency conservation.
