Microplastics (MPs) are released into the environment through human activities and transported by rivers from land to sea. Biofilms, which ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems such as rivers, may play an essential role fate of MPs their ingestion biofilm protists. To assess this, biofilms were naturally grown on clay tiles River Rhine, Germany, analysed a combined field laboratory study. Compared ambient river water, for 6, 12, 18 months Rhine contained up 10 times more MPs. Between 70% 78% all smaller than 50 μm. In experiments, covered with 1-month-old retained 6-12 without coverage. Furthermore, 6 μm ciliate Stentor coeruleus was confirmed, positive correlation between rates MP concentrations found. The results relevant particle transport models riverine systems, risk assessment regarding distribution environment, effects micro- macroorganisms.
