Abstract This study focused on testing the response of assimilation apparatus evergreen Pinaceae species to increasing levels oxidative stress simulated in manipulative experiments. Needles were collected from mature individuals Pinus mugo , cembra sylvestris Abies alba and Picea abies at foothill (FH) alpine treeline ecotone (ATE) High Tatras (Western Carpathians). The injury index (INX), quantified by modified electrolyte leakage (EL) method, indicated severe needle damage due exposure extremely high O 3 . Ozonation induced changes chemical composition needles, which detected via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. stability (OxS) indicator derived INXs was used determine stomatal flux-based critical level CL(OxS), with threshold value OxS -0.05, corresponding 5% needles. Assessment phytotoxic ozone dose (POD0) under ambient field environmental conditions during 2023 growing season CL(OxS) revealed that studied utilised between 18% ( FH) 33% ATE) their tolerance potential. These results support our hypothesis Tatras, are part Alpine biogeographical region Eastern Central Europe, vulnerable concentrations significantly higher than typical natural environment.
